This course offers three different perspectives on the law: the legal, the social and the normative. We spend the first part of the course exploring the definitions of law and the different understandings of law in a general sense. We take a brief look at the different legal systems of the world, and we discuss various fields of law: constitutional law, administrative law, criminal law, private law, international law and human rights. After the Spring break, the course deals with the relationship between law and society and the concept of justice. In addition to reading and discussing the main principles within each field of law, we explore them through reading case law, visiting legal institutions, conducting interviews with legal professionals and performing trial court simulations.
